How to read IVs and appraisals

In 3 lines
- IVs run from 0 to 15 for each of Attack, Defense and HP, and appraisal stars are set by the sum of the three (0–45).
- Each way of getting a Pokémon has an IV floor, so Pokémon from raids, Eggs and research have at least 10 in every stat.
- For the same Pokémon at the same level, higher CP means higher IVs, so comparing with the CP chart gives you a quick guess.
What are IVs?
Every Pokémon has hidden values from 0 to 15 for Attack, Defense and HP. These are its IVs. At the same level, higher IVs mean higher CP and stats. In the game, tap 'Appraise' in the Pokémon's menu to see the three stats as bars and stars.
Reading appraisal stars
Stars are set only by the sum of the three stats. Whether the IVs lean to one side like 15/15/7 or are spread evenly like 13/12/12, a sum of 37 gets 3 stars either way.
| Appraisal | IV sum | Percent |
|---|---|---|
| 0 stars | 0–22 | 0–48.9% |
| 1 star | 23–29 | 51.1–64.4% |
| 2 stars | 30–36 | 66.7–80.0% |
| 3 stars | 37–44 | 82.2–97.8% |
| 3 stars (pink badge, 100%) | 45 | 100% |
In the site's reference tables, tap a row to see how many combinations each grade has and the odds for each way of getting a Pokémon.
IV floors by source
The minimum value for each stat (the floor) depends on where you got the Pokémon.
| Source | Floor for each stat |
|---|---|
| Wild | 0 (4 with weather boost) |
| Shadow Pokémon from Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders | 0 (4 with weather boost) |
| Giovanni's Shadow Pokémon, Shadow Raids | 6 |
| Field Research, Special Research, Egg hatches | 10 |
| Raids, Max Battles | 10 |
| Trades (by friendship level) | 1 · 2 · 3 · 5, Lucky Trade 12 |
A Pokémon caught in a raid never comes out with 0 or 1 star. The floor is 10, so the sum can't go below 30.
Guessing IVs from CP
Raid, Egg and research Pokémon come at a set level (level 20 for raids, or level 25 with weather boost). So if you compare the CP you see before catching with the CP chart for that level, you can tell right away whether it's 100%. For example, on the Dragonite CP chart, the highest CP in the raid row is the 100% IV one.
GO Battle League is different
In the Great League (1,500) and Ultra League (2,500), which have CP caps, a lower Attack IV lets a Pokémon reach a higher level within the same CP, so its Defense and HP grow. That's why a Pokémon with fewer stars is sometimes better for GO Battle League.
Checklist
- Check the appraisal stars before powering up
- For raid Pokémon, compare the CP with the CP chart before catching
- For GO Battle League, set aside Pokémon with low Attack and high Defense and HP
